THE CESCO TIMES - October 2009 - photo news for photo people

IN THIS ISSUE - NEW EVERYTHING!
PEOPLE/PRODUCTS/PROMOTIONS!

Your favourite online newsletter is back again - no not the one from the dodgy political organisation in Canberra - the one from us, the Stirling Street photographic shop. We've got better ideas about how to save the nation and ours are a lot more fun!

HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS:

Spring has arrived at Camera Electronic Service Company and we have lots of fresh new growth to report. The wildflowers may have died off a little by the time you read this but there are still plenty of new blooms at the shop - some more exotic than others.

NEW FACES:

We have a brand new apprentice - Daniel Weaver - who will be learning how to sweep up, go for coffee, and disassemble multi-element lenses. He will be under the firm control of our senior technician for at least two of those tasks. More reports later.

We also have the undoubted luxury of a service administrator - Adrian Grant joins us to bring his long experience in the photographic trade to bear on our service work flow. Expect good things.

And last but by no means least - Claire Benfall behind the counter in the sales floor. Claire has been in the photo industry before as well, so ask her to help you with camera and lens selection.

NEW DEALERSHIP - NEW TIMES:

Do you love Canon cameras? Are you a working professional who wishes to have the best of the best Canon glassware? Now CESCO can help you achieve your Canon dreams with a full Professional Dealership.

This means that we now have access to all the professional gear - the long lenses - the wide lenses, the perspective-control lenses. In the coming months we will be getting a progressively larger number of the special lenses and the heavy-duty professional bodies that you need.

Right now as I type this there are new lenses in the stores. You need a 50mm f1.2 and 24mm f1.4 And there is a brand new 85mm 1.2 lens there that is just crying out for a portrait professional to take it and make money with it...

Come see us over the next few months and discover what Canon has in store for you.

LEICA have decided that making he best 35mm-sized digital rangefinder cameras in the world is not enough - they have added the new-concept S2 to their planned line up. Imagine a digital SLR camera not much bigger than the average - a camera that you can use with ease. A camera that has a full range of LEICA lenses especially designed for it. But…with a sensor the same size as a medium format camera! Imagine a jpeg at 37.5 Mb… Unsurpassed detail in large files - smooth tonality guaranteed. Enough picture power in all respects to satisfy the most particular client. This is going to be a landmark in the photographic world.

THE NEW X1

Do you remember the first of the production LEICA camera - the A series? Golly - you're older than I am…well you'll remember that it was a delightfully portable device, all the capability of the big cameras of the day in your pocket. A whole world of immediate and intimate portraiture and reportage opened up.

Well now you get to do it all over again in digital form with the new LEICA X1. It even has the distinctive LEICA rounded ends and the feel of a real camera. Completely made in Germany with a 24mm elmarit M lens. Plus it is digital plus it has an in-built flash. Call us a pre-order now.

LEICA ON THE CHEAP:

That surprised you, didn't it? Well it surprised this writer as well, but the owners assure me that it is real - LEICA are reducing prices on their lenses and accessories. With the new models coming on the market NOW is the time to finally get yourself some LEICA glass. Remember that you only buy LEICA lenses once - they do not wear out or develop wrinkles at the knees.

INTERNET FOLLIES OR DON'T STEP IN THE BLOG:

It used to be for better or for worse. In these days of the computer social networking sites it has become for Twitter or for verse.

In response to an overwhelming call to sit down and shut up, CESCO has decided to do the exact opposite. We have commissioned a team of IT ex-perts to put us on the net with pages on Facebook and Twitter.

A BREAKOUT SUCCESS:

On the 22nd of September CESCO cooperated with FITZGERALD'S PHOTO LAB and JORGENSEN ALBUMS to host the "Breakout 2009" at The Breakwater at Hillary's. This was a prime opportunity for Perth photographers to hear Rick Symes, Christian Fletcher, David Oliver, and Alan Moyle and to see examples of their work. Make that OUTSTANDING work.

We were also fortunate in having the services of Tony Hewitt as MC - he was able to introduce these award-winning artists and businessmen to a crowd that wanted to see and wanted to know.

Please check out these websites:

Now when you get seminars by practitioners of this quality - and on such diverse subjects as artistic results and social inter working to build business, well you know you have had value for money - the great food and drinks didn't hurt either. It was so successful that everyone is planning to do it all over again in 2010. We'll let you know in plenty of time, but remember that when we announce it you would be best to scoot in here or ring us to make your booking - events this good book out completely!

THE ANIMALS HAVE ESCAPED FROM THE ZOO!

Who left the cages open?

This is the question that has haunted us down here at CESCO ever since Nikon and us hosted a NIKON WORKSHOP on the 20th of September. We had a wonderful presentation by Rocco Ancora - the multi-award winning Melbourne wedding photographer - and you could tell that the audience was blown away by the images shown. Rocco opened a few eyes, not the least being my own, to the possibilities of constant portable lighting and the digital camera.

The NIKON company was great - they brought a whole raft of exotic NIKON lenses for the participants to try. We had spots all over the zoo where the participants could try the tele, macro, wide, low-light, and general lenses, and take the images home for close analysis on their own computers. The animals and the weather cooperated and quite a few great shots are now in portfolios all over Perth.

Rothschild's restaurant fed us very well, and no one had to steal food out of the cages.

But who forgot to lock the gibbon's enclosure? And how do we get the baby elephant out of the pool at home? This thing is costing a fortune in excess water, not to mention buns.

Watch this space for the next CESCO workshop - plans are afoot…

THE LOWLIGHT FOR THE HIGH LIFE!

That may seem like a bit of purple prose, but it does tie in well with the real purpose of the paragraph. The recent NIKON workshop at the Perth Zoo introduced us to Rocco Ancora who in his turn introduced us to the LOWELL LIGHT.

The LOWELL ID LIGHT is a completely portable system of constant light available for the wedding worker, photojournalist, or fashion specialist. Combined with a top-notch professional DSLR like the NIKON D3 - or the CANON 5D mkII, or the etc…and you have the ability to paint light into any scene you choose. All of a sudden the restrictions of studio flash are removed.

The system is modular - you can attach the light to your camera over your hot shoe, or at the side, or on a swivelling bracket. You can have it in the hand of an assistant. You can have it on a tripod or light stand - it is truly universal. There are a number of light modifiers that make sure your control is never lost - think of barn doors, honeycombs, boxes, snoots. The battery pack that powers it is also easy to accommodate - the size of a medium shoulder bag with a comfortable strap.

Rocco and his assistant have practised the art of location lighting with this kit - subtly brushing portions of their subject while their DSLR captures the essence of what at first appears to be only ambient lighting. True mastery of the technique - the beauty of the subject is seen without the viewer realising that light has been added

Call us for LOWELL ID prices or call in and try the kit. Mention this newsletter and get it for $849 complete kit. RRP $999

NEW NIKON:

Of course you knew that the NIKON D300 has been upgraded to the D300s? Ah, but did you realise that we already have stocks of this new camera for sale? This is a subtle but thorough revisiting to add new features - full D-Movie mode with HD quality video at 24 frames per second and stereo sound - quiet shooting mode - dual card slot for SD as well as CF cards. This is a great camera made even better.

Also huge specials on...

  • Nikon D300s - RRP $2999 - NOW $2499
  • Nikon D700 - RRP $4499 - NOW $3799
  • Nikon D3x - RRP $13999 - NOW $10999

Why not treat yourself to a new NIKON lens to match the camera. We have some of the new 18-200 mm VR II lens in stock and with the improved optical quality and the new lens transport lock this would make a perfect pair. If the exchequer can stand it - or you are due for a Christmas present some time soon - think about the 70-200 f.2.8 VRII. This is a workhorse of a lens that gives nothing away in optical excellence while retaining a tough metal barrel build.

PRINTER NEWS:

The writer of the CESCO times is human, despite what his relatives say. But he has human weaknesses - like spending his money on things he fancies. Recently he fancied getting into home printing with an EPSON inkjet printer - in his case a Stylus Pro 3800. It was a leap of faith but he took one home, unpacked it according to the printed instructions, and started feeding files from his computer into it.

The result was startling. The printer accepted the instructions from the computer, did its own colour management, buzzed and clacked, and spit out a great first print. Then, over the next couple of months, it did the same thing 599 times. A4 prints, A3prints, A3+ prints time after time. No smears, no spots, no lines. Just good pictures.

The computer screen was calibrated with a SPYDER EXPRESS 2 colorimeter and things got better. New papers were purchased and things got even better. When it needed fresh ink it politely flashed a light to warn me but still kept printing for 20 more prints - gave me time to go get another cartridge. When I wanted to change from matt black to glossy black it did all the hard work for me automatically.

As Bogey said, "I think this will be the start of a beautiful relationship."

Come into Camera Electronics and see the 3800 and its companion EPSON printers. They really do make the art and science of digital printing easy to do.
