Is There A Retrographer Lurking Inside You? - Part Six

on December 01, 2023

Do you have what it takes to make that retro camera sit up and click?

You may have the new retro cam with the dials and styling - you may have bought the accessories - you may even have put the settings on some classic film simulation. But can you go the mental hard yards?

Note I said yards. Go back to the menu and select feet and yards for all the distances. You are only allowed millimetres for the focal lengths of the lenses. If you travel anywhere it'll be miles, too.

You need to decide on an outfit. Look at your camera and note when cameras what looked like it were made. Then google up fashions of that year. That is what you will be dressing in.

Bad luck if your camera is centred on 1968. Flared trousers and flower shirts will be expensive...

Cheer up. For every era of fashion there were conservative alternatives that never really stood out or went out of fashion. Photographers often wore pretty ordinary duds when they were working and you can probably do so too.

You may have to do something about the hair or makeup. Again bouffant hair or drooping moustache are not really needed for most photography. Just wash regularly and get a haircut.

But a tip for all shooters in all situations: wear good shoes - as good as you can afford. They make you look much more professional and keep your feet from hurting. Comfy feet are retro feet.

Always liked the old hats? Well, unless they re-film “Homicide “ the best chance you have to wear one will be as a retrographer…
