Ever pondered what photography truly entails? It's essentially "writing with light" or "drawing with light," whichever tickles your fancy. Without light, photography ceases to exist. Yep, it's that crucial. Yet, ironically, many shutterbugs still quiver at the mere thought of wielding lights and flashes.

Why the paradox? Well, it's often down to a lack of hands-on experience with the right gear.

Picture this: sleek, minimal buttons, and it works for you, not the other way around. It's a game-changer, folks.

So, this post is your VIP pass into the world of Profoto. Think of it as the illuminating guide to top-notch lighting solutions for photographers everywhere.

We're rolling out the red carpet for Profoto's current ambassadors. Get ready to dive into their captivating work, peppered with awe-inspiring images and enough inspiration to power a thousand creative fires. These pros will show you what's possible when you master the art of light.

And here's the kicker: many of these luminaries once trembled at the thought of using flash. But now? They're the masters, wielding light like seasoned pros.

So, if you've ever shied away from flash, fear not—there's a bright future ahead with Profoto. Let's shine together!

Arno de Bruijn

Profoto A10

“As a portrait and wedding photographer, I use multiple Profoto A10 and A2 speedlights. I enjoy using Profoto because these flashes always do what I ask of them. They are super reliable, the batteries last a long time, and they have a very fast recycling time, ensuring that not only light and creativity but also the moment itself is perfectly captured in my creations.”

Tip for Wedding & Portrait Photographers:
Create a silhouette! Making a silhouette is very simple and can be done with just one light, like the A10, but it's much more enjoyable and creative to use multiple lights and light shapers + color gels. Position the speedlight towards the wall and place your couple in front of the speedlight. Use a colored gel for the desired color effect and use the dome to achieve an even more beautiful and softer round effect on the wall. I always start with an in-camera underexposure of; 1/160 - F/8.0 - ISO 100 and the speedlight at full wide and power 8.0. From these settings, I fine-tune the settings slightly to achieve an awesome silhouette photo. Using this technique, you can create increasingly creative results with multiple speedlights, light shapers, and color gels.

Bonus tip:
“Smile and have fun while creatively shooting. Every mistake is the base of your learning process! By learning from your mistakes, you'll become a better photographer in the future.”

Johnson Wee

Profoto A10 + B10X Plus

Wedding photographer @johnsonweew goes to great lengths to find dramatic backdrops for his striking portraits. With a keen eye for detail, he skillfully places lights to accentuate his subjects, resulting in beautifully illuminated photos that last a lifetime.

“Shot from right opposite of this staircase at the old train station, the camera position was pretty distant. For the on-camera trigger to be able to trigger the two lights illuminating both the bride and groom without fail, is one of the main reasons why I stuck with Profoto all these years, as I’m truly fed up with triggers not working or the flash not firing if camera is too far away from the lights!

Unforgettable experience finding the perfect balance of light, composition and movement to photograph a beautiful couple along with the magnificent monument in Pattaya

“This specific image was created in Thailand, and it was a challenging vision to realize, as there were many elements including the elephant, which was the most difficult part, hence we had no chance of test shot prior. I love shooting with bride and groom in different positions and placements around the location, thus a multiple light setup in location is inevitable. This is why light consistency is paramount as I don’t want faults and differences in power output as well as color balance. With the Profoto system, no matter A-series with B-series, I never had to worry about those issues anymore!”

A modern day Rapunzel.

“This beautiful tower helped us create the epic Rapunzel fairy tale story, with the super long veil in place of the long golden hair to create a modern-day version of the story. Both Profoto lights were place facing the walls with the subjects standing near to them and light sources bounced off the walls to create the subtly soft glow on their faces.”

“I’ve been experimenting with on-location settings where heavier duty equipment just isn’t as practical and that’s where my love affair with the compact A10 started. It weighs next to nothing, and I can pack it with me to create dynamic images on-the-go with modifiers like the new Clic Softbox Octa.”

Miles Witt Boyer

Profoto A10 + Clic Softbox

“The Profoto A10 is as essential in my camera bag as the camera itself. Its consistency, power, and design makes adding either a kiss of light or filling an entire room another tool in my toolkit as an artist. There is a reason why Profoto is the standard and I have seen in the field again and again how investing in great light can empower great photography.”

Lighting tip

The moment you overthink light you’ve lost the creative edge that hides your best work. Light and shadow should be playgrounds photographers enjoy playing inside and learning to work with light creatively should be fueled by curiosity and creativity instead of insecurity and anxiety. Start small and perfect each tiny technique first and you’ll feel more and more capable of trying bigger things.

Nicole Ashley

Profoto A10 + Clic Softbox

“The Profoto A10 wth the Clic Softbox is an amazing combination that allows me to add quality light to a set without any fuss. Within seconds I can transform a look on location. As someone who shoots a lot of destination work, having access to lightweight gear makes a difference.”

“I absolutely love the A10 and the Clic Softbox! It's so intuitive and I love having the option of strobe or continuous light. I think that's going to be huge for photographers transiting into professional lighting. Being able to use a lighting system that takes no time at all to set up is amazing.”

Tip

One tip I can offer to wedding photographers is to utilize a combo as simple but as effective as this to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Because this system can be set up so quickly, sneaking your couple out for extra photos at night or getting the perspective of them viewing their venue from the outside is a great way to wrap up the wedding gallery vs just ending it on the dance floor.

Rune Havn

Profoto A10 + Clic Softbox

Captures beautiful relationships and genuine moments; ones that can be relived year after year.

A tip from Rune's blog - "I like to challenge myself. I have a need for constant development to get better. Not just getting better with the camera. Better with people, better with business, better with planning, creativity and technical development. Taking photos is much more than pressing the shutter button."

Wedding photographer Rune Havn took the new Clic Softbox to the snowy mountains of Norway to photograph a couple. Follow along as he keeps the look natural while adding a little kiss of light.

“The flash is absolutely perfect for just enough light to pop the photo.”
