Well, I figured I could get some thermoform plastic and repair it myself, but before I did so, I thought to contact the service department of Fujifilm Australia in New South Wales to see if they could just sell me another thumb piece.
They were very prompt and helpful - contacting me within a day and suggesting that I send the camera to them for a free warranty replacement of the faulty parts. When I mentioned that it was out of warranty, they said to send it in anyway. There is a page of instructions on how to do it on their website.
Okay...the camera went in to Australia Post on the 7th of March. The department contacted me to say it had arrived and then said they would send it once completed.
It arrived back in my hands on the 29th - all the coverings replaced, the camera cleaned, and the newest firmware update done inside it. Plus an apology for me having to miss out using it during the repair time. All at no charge.
I can't praise this standard of service enough. They certainly do look after their equipment and their customer relationships. I'll now look at getting a protective half-case for it to keep the repairs in good condition.
Many thanks, Fujifilm.
