Think Retro - See Retro - Part Seven

on December 01, 2023

What retro pictures are out there? You'll know if you've been doing your book research. Essentially everything that you can see has some retro aspect to it...even if it is as new as tomorrow.

Because the world of tomorrow was a constant theme for the world of yesterday. Now that we are here we can laugh at what they thought we'd look like...but you can rest assured that future generations will laugh at what we do look like.

People do not change - even the ones that never look the same two days running. You can find types, and faces, and situations now that have appeared in photos for the last century and a half.

Neither do some other themes; architecture, art pieces, seascapes, flowers, still life subjects. These are a duck shoot to do in retro style - particularly if you are working in monochrome.

Portraiture needs more careful planning as some modern lenses make harder and sharper shots than the subjects can well stand. And you cannot just try to retreat behind a big aperture and a soft backdrop - many older portraits were taken with cameras and lenses that you cannot duplicate.

Shoot retro, but know the limits. If it helps, get a cheap Chinese MF lens in your focal length and revel in the optical aberrations. They may be exactly like those of the old lens from which they pirated the design.
