Diffusers serve to spread and soften harsh light from a bare bulb or umbrella. These will create a smooth gradient between your shadows and the subject, compared to the harsh contrast of a bare reflector or umbrella. 

Gels are also used to create unique lighting effects for mood lighting in photography and video. Pair a gel with a gobo set to further highlight a creative effect.
