Lighting booms are used to hold overweight items above the subject. They are most commonly used by audio techs for accurate shotgun microphone audio, while in photography they are used to suspend heavy softboxes and modifiers over the subject. 

It is important to understand weight balances when mounting lights to boom arms; without a counterweight (known as a shot bag) to support the stand, it will collapse.
