Merging Nikon’s imaging legacy with RED’s cinema DNA, the Nikon ZR Digital Cinema Hybrid Camera is built for filmmakers, content creators, and hybrid shooters who demand uncompromised quality across both stills and motion. Designed around a 24.5MP full-frame/FX-format partially stacked CMOS sensor, the ZR delivers rich 12-bit internal RAW recording, advanced autofocus with deep subject recognition, and a rugged yet compact magnesium alloy body ready for professional workflows in the field or studio.

Full-Frame Imaging, Optimized for Cinema

The heart of the Nikon ZR is its 24.5MP full-frame/FX-format partially stacked CMOS sensor, optimized for speed, dynamic range, and cinematic tonality. Photographers can push ISO from 100–64,000 (expandable to 50–204,800), while video shooters benefit from a dedicated sensitivity architecture: ISO 100–51,200 (expandable to 204,800) with dedicated tone curve modes including HLG, N-Log, and RED’s Log3G10.

The result: over 15 stops of dynamic range (Log3G10, in-house testing), RED-supervised color science, and a flexible foundation for post-production color grading.

Engineered for modern cinema, the ZR supports internal RAW recording and multiple high-bitrate codecs:

Cinema-Ready Controls & Audio

The ZR introduces tools normally reserved for dedicated cinema cameras: shutter angle control, vertical video recording, and base ISO selection for R3D NE workflows.

Audio options are equally robust, with support for built-in microphones, external microphones, line input, and external devices via the digital accessory shoe. Users can capture Linear PCM (48 kHz, 24-bit/32-bit float) or AAC (48 kHz, 16-bit) depending on format. Advanced features include OZO Audio directivity control, adjustable input sensitivity, attenuator, and wind-noise reduction.

Autofocus & Stabilization

The camera employs a hybrid focal-plane phase-detection/contrast AF system with 273 selectable points covering 90% × 90% of the frame. AI-driven subject detection tracks people, animals, and vehicles with modes optimized for both stills and video.

For smooth handheld shooting, the 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) offers up to 7.5 stops (CIPA, center) of shake reduction, with Synchro VR compatibility for supported Z lenses.

Though cinema-focused, the ZR remains a capable stills camera. The 24.5MP CMOS sensor captures high-quality images with deep dynamic range, wide ISO flexibility, and Nikon’s Z-mount compatibility. Shutter speeds range from 1/16,000 to 30s, with extended long exposure capability up to −900s in manual mode.

Workflow & Cloud Collaboration

Built for connected productions, the ZR supports direct transfer to computers, FTP servers, cloud collaboration platforms, and smart devices.
